Qagħqa tal-Appostli (Apostle’s Ring)

The famous Maltese bread, consumed during Lent.

Ingredients:

  • 500g Plain Flour

  • 12g Dry Yeast

  • 1tsp Sugar

  • 1tsp Salt

  • 2tbsp Olive Oil

  • 280ml Water

  • 1 Egg

  • Raw Almonds

  • Sesame Seeds

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the water and oil. Then continue with the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.

  2. Work it into a dough.

  3. Cover the bowl with cling film, and let it rise for an hour in a warm place like an oven (turned off)

  4. When it doubles in size, place it on a floured surface and shape it into a large ring.

  5. Cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise again for 30 minutes.

  6. if it doesn’t puff up enough, leave it for some more.

  7. Transfer it to a baking tin.

  8. Make an egg wash (2tbsp water with an egg) and brush the dough ring.

  9. Decorate it with the almonds and sprinkle the sesame seeds.

  10. Bake in a preheated 180°c oven and bake for 30-40 minutes or until it gets nicely brown.

  11. Allow it to cool off completely before serving.
