Imqaret Orjentali

Not exactly an Asian variation but a 'cheat' on the Maltese Traditional Imqaret using wonton wrappers instead of the traditional dough. This makes them lighter and crispier.


Ingredients (makes around 30)

Filling:

  • 200g Pitted Dates

  • 170ml Water

  • 1tbsp Anisette Liqueur

  • 1tbsp Orange Blossom Water

  • 1tbsp Grated Orange Rind

  • 1/4tsp Mixed Spice

  • 1pkt Wonton Wrappers

  • 50g Icing Sugar

  • Vegetable Oil for Frying

Directions:

  • 1. In a saucepan combine the dates, water, anisette, orange blossom water, mixed spice & orange zest. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

    2. Uncover, mix well until you get a paste consistency. Cool down before using.

    3. To make things simpler, place the date paste in a piping bag.

    4. Fill about a teaspoon of the mixture on each wonton wrapper and seal them using some water on the edges. Make sure to leave the air out.

    5. Fry in small batches in hot oil until they come to the surface. Rotate them to get a nice golden colour on both sides.

    5. Serve with some icing sugar.
